Minnesota treats the windshield differently
Minnesota Statutes section 169.71, subdivision 4, clause (1), prohibits operating a vehicle when the windshield is covered or treated with material that makes it more reflective or otherwise reduces light transmission through the windshield. The statute does not expressly provide a general aftermarket eyebrow, AS-1 strip, or five-inch tint-band exception.
Why people ask about windshield film
Drivers commonly ask about glare, cabin comfort, interior exposure, and a visually complete tint package. Those are reasonable goals, but the proposed solution still has to fit Minnesota law.

Medical exceptions
Minnesota provides an exception for documented medical needs when the statutory requirements are satisfied. A 2026 amendment clarified that an optometrist, as well as a physician, may provide the required statement. The document must address whether the condition is temporary or permanent, the minimum permitted light transmission, and an expiration date unless the condition is permanent.
